Success is a Choice

Sep 20, 2022

Today's guest on "The Coachable Coach" series is Tom Shaw, the men's golf coach at Abilene Christian University.

"The Coachable Coach" series on the Success is a Choice Podcast Network goes beyond the X's and O's as Jamy Bechler talks with some of the best sports coaches.

Jamy talks with coaches who value growth, improvement, and leadership – not just with their athletes but for themselves, as well. They believe that a strong culture doesn’t just happen by accident. Good coaches may know the X’s and O’s, the tactics, and strategies that should lead to winning BUT great coaches know their athletes. Great coaches go beyond the X’s and O’s. Great coaches know how to inspire their athletes to do their best and maximize their chances for success.

Tom Shaw is the men's golf coach at Abilene Christian University. Prior to his time at ACU, he was the head coach at Vanderbilt University and Tulane University. His 2022 ACU team won the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) title and qualified for the NCAA Regionals. Both of these accomplishments were historical firsts for the program. Tom also earned 2022 WAC Coach of the Year honors.

This is a very insightful episode as Tom and Jamy talk about how to inspire athletes, mistakes he's learned from, and what he looks for in an athlete and assistant coach. He truly is a coachable coach. Whether you coach golf or not, there's something for everyone in this episode.

"You want to be a better putter, then hit the ball closer to the hole so you have shorter putts. You want a better culture, then recruit better people." (Tom Shaw)
